MANILA -- With the threats of long-range missile bombardment now a looming reality, there is a need for the Philippines to invest in missile defense technology to fully protect itself against these threats.

This was disclosed by Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana on Wednesday when asked on whether the country is planning to acquire such defensive capabilities in wake of North Korea's cancelled attempt to fire four intermediate-range missiles off the waters of Guam.

"Yes, definitely. Since future wars will be fought off with stand-off weapons, meaning those missiles launched from a great distances. We need to invest on defenses to protect ourselves," he added.

While acquisition of these capabilities are not slated for Armed Forces of the Modernization Program (AFP) Horizon 2, which will run from 2018 to 2022, the DND chief said it is possible that the country might initially acquire detection capabilities before the actual missile batteries themselves.

Horizon 2 is the phase where the AFP will begin the acquisition of multi-role fighters and other advanced weaponry.

    1. Marawi could drive their will. I myself thought that scs dispute would drive them. It did but that drive soon simmered down. Propably because of unclos they thought they had it. Still china didnt even care. Unclos is just a rule a law n it is own paper. rule and law is one thing but whats the point of rules and laws when no one is there to enforced it? Phillippine cant enforced it. UN is about rule and law. In the end when it comes to enforcememt it is uncle sam who do all the work. They r doing it for the phillippines when perfroming freedom of navigation. At the same time they r doing this for themselves and for the interest of all parties who wish the seas to be open all except a few. Now the tide has changed. Seems like the phillippines is taking a more china friendly approach. China is nice to give some assets. Still we all know there is a motivation behind it. Whether china thinks that by giving or helping the phillippines would give them the advantage by grabbing islands and reclaim land is ultimately the will of tge phillippines. If they just accept the offer and dont care china is happy. Still it will be ironic if one day their weapons were to be used against them.
