TAWAU: Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) plans to base its amphibious Bombardier CL415 aircraft in Sabah to beef up efforts to keep the waters in the state safe from intrusions.

Its operation deputy director Datuk Ahmad Puzi Ab Kahar said the proposal would become a reality when the agency, which was established seven years ago, owns its own airbase in Sabah .

“We have plans to base our aircraft in Sabah when the government is able to give an allocation. We plan to build a base in Kota Kinabalu and an airbase in Sandakan ,” he said.

“If we get a land allocation from the Sabah government, we will implement quickly,” he said yesterday when making a working visit here.

Earlier, Ahmad Puzi travelled to Tawau from Kota Kinabalu by an MMEA Bombardier  CL415 aircraft which landed on the waters at Cowie Bay after a surveillance mission to several coastal areas of Sabah .

The Canada-made aircraft is one of two acquired by MMEA, and they are the first such aircraft in operation in Southeast Asia .
